Bear Lake Flyover Geeky Facts

So it took me far longer than it should have, but I managed to pull it off. This render is the first view of the flyover animation I did for a work project. It was created using 24K DEMs mosaiced in ArcView 3.2 and the 2004 NAIP (National Agriculture Imagery Program) for Bear Lake and Rich County. Unfortunately, Rich County's NAIP sucks absolute rocks and I had to go in and try to match colors (unsuccessful) and even out the lake tones (more successful). Also, they were both MrSid files and LizardTech has decided to pull their older software that allows you to export them to something more useable. Damn capitalists. But I finally found the old version of the software on a government site. Yeah, I was surprised too.
But the really hard part (besides figuring out how to position the camera in the animation) was the draping that I did with the SIDs. I had to eyeball the DEMs (which are really just 16-bit grayscales of the elevations of the area) and then guess where the SIDs would go. I wasn't completely accurate; on the eastern shore you can see places where the lake travels up the mountain a bit. And let's not even get started on where the road that circles the lake ended up.
Anyway, the rest of the story is that I brought all these things into Bryce 5, got completely twisted around in my new little world (Bryce brings DEMs in upside down) and managed to burn up an entire weekend producing 10 seconds of video. But hey, it's cool. :)
